Why we diverge in design process

Divergence is used in the design processes to hear different points of views, ideas, perspectives and extremes, to enlarge horizon, to beware the possibilities, to increase chances of success and to be aware of barriers/risks and etc. Using divergence methods is a very powerful tool for not only hearing the opions from the group you are working with but also benchmarking the topic you are studying.

Steps

  1. Define the scope about how much you should diverge (it can change the number of methods and/or the number of elements in the methods you will use to diverge)
  2. Identify divergence methods with respect to the topic (I wrote some divergence methods below)
  3. Implement the method(s)
  4. Decide on whether step 3’s outputs are enough or not.
  5. If they are not, turn step 2 to enrich outputs. You can increase the number of outputs by using same method by increasing the number of elements in method.
  6. You can apply other divergence methods
  7. If they are, divergent method is to be completed
