Why we converge in design process

Convergence is used in the design process to synthesize different point of views, ideas and opinions, to x-ray all inputs given by participants, to combine the ideas, to categorize the them and to facilitate to see the big picture of the topic you are working with and etc.

Steps

  1. Have more than two inputs with regard to the topic you study. (You can use divergence methods to generate ideas or inputs. If you want to learn how to diverge in design process, you can click this link to visit Divergence Method Guide.)
  2. Identify convergence method with respect to the topic you are working with. (I listed below some convergence methods.)
  3. Implement the method(s).
  4. Decide on whether step 3’s output meets your need or not.
  5. If it is not, turn step 1, enrich the inputs and follow convergence method again.
  6. If it is, convergence method is to be finished.

Some Convergence Methods you can use

  1. Voting and selecting the top rated
  2. Creating a matrix (Importance and Urgency , Importance and Impact and etc), drag and drop inputs with regard to their values in matrix (thinking of values as how much important/urgent/impact/(whatever you choose) it is) and selecting input placed in the right top corner
  3. Synthesizing inputs and creating a new input
  4. Combing inputs that are related with each other, voting them and selecting the top rated
  5. Placing items near to items that are similar to each other (categorizing them), giving titles to categorized inputs, voting titles and selecting top rated.
